DCR & Probing – Blocked Tear Duct Treatment at Madhuchhaaya Eye Care Centre
What is Tear Duct Obstruction?
Blocked tear ducts occur when the normal drainage system of tears (nasolacrimal duct) becomes narrowed or completely blocked. This prevents tears from draining properly into the nasal cavity, leading to excessive tearing, irritation, crusting, recurrent infections, and discomfort around the inner corner of the eye. In adults, this condition may result from chronic sinus issues, inflammation, trauma, or age-related narrowing of the tear drainage system.
Symptoms of Blocked Tear Ducts
Common signs include:
Excessive tearing (epiphora)
Persistent eye irritation or discharge
Redness or swelling near the nose
Recurrent eye infections
If left untreated, chronic obstruction can lead to discomfort and infection of the lacrimal sac.
Treatment Options
Probing
For many patients (especially children), a procedure called probing may be recommended. During probing, a very fine instrument is gently passed through the tear duct to open the blockage. This procedure is quick and is often done in a controlled clinical setting under anesthesia.
Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) Surgery
When tear duct blockage is persistent or severe, Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is the preferred surgical treatment. In DCR surgery, a small incision is made near the nose to create a new drainage passage between the lacrimal sac and the nasal cavity. This bypasses the blocked duct and allows tears to drain freely, relieving symptoms. AAO
There are different approaches to DCR:
External DCR: A traditional surgical method with a small incision outside the nose.
Endoscopic (Endonasal) DCR: A minimally invasive technique using an endoscope through the nasal passage—no external scar and faster recovery. Ophthalmic Consultants of Vermont
In many cases, a small silicone tube is temporarily placed in the new drainage opening to prevent re-blockage while healing takes place.
